The West End, located within the Colorado Plateau, is a land of mesas, mountains and canyons.

Not to be confused with the Western Slope…the West End represents the west ends of Montrose and San Miguel counties in Colorado. Nucla, Naturita, Bedrock, Redvale, Paradox, and Norwood collectively represent the slogan “Many Towns. One Community.”

The West End is a rural and historic region with other-worldly landscapes, historic mining structures and ancient pathways. Dinosaurs to natives, to miners and now recreationalists, this unique corner of Colorado has always drawn those in search of a slower pace, quiet life and a deep appreciation for nature. The remote, rugged area showcases the diversity of Colorado’s landscape with vast wilderness encompassing dramatic red rock canyons, high desert mesas, wide-open pastureland, and the confluence of two river systems. It is an undiscovered outdoor Mecca, offering something for everyone.

The current population density is very low and the area is widely considered to be “Frontier”. While ranching and farming began in the early 1900’s, intermittent radium, vanadium and uranium mining booms added people and wealth during boom times, which then dwindled during the bust years. Oil and gas explorers were active during these times as well. Significant dirt road infrastructure was established to support these booms, which are now left quiet. The vast majority of the land is owned by the Federal Government, with some interspersed State and Private land.

With breathtaking views, and a temperate climate there are countless wilderness experiences at your fingertips…you just have to dig a little to find them! We do not have billboards or even signage on most trails. But, if you take the time to do a little research – you will find hidden gems like stunning trails, waterfalls, rock arches, and petroglyphs throughout the region.

If you’re coming out for the West End Gravel Rush, we encourage you to make a weekend of it!
